My Core Values – What They Mean to Me

Reflectiveness

It is important to take time to reflect on issues, on my own behaviour, on the effect I’m having on other people, on my beliefs. Only by reflecting can I make sense of my actions. Personally, I need that space and time to think clearly about what I’ve done and said and whether I could have done it better.

Determination

To achieve my goals, I need determination and the belief that what I’m doing is worthwhile and will be of benefit to others. Life itself can be distracting. There’s always something or someone intruding into your time, often unintentionally destroying your concentration. I have to be above all that, ready to return to the job in hand, literally making every minute count.

Happiness

I believe that happiness is a fundamental human need. This doesn’t necessarily mean having money or possessions. Happiness comes from giving to others but also knowing how to receive and to be grateful for the gifts we have and using them well.

Caring

Caring and helping are fundamental to being human. We love and care for our children and for our parents when they grow old. We can do no other, it’s what holds our human societies together, wherever they are in the world, and whatever their material circumstances.

Contentment

Caring for, helping and giving to others is essential for us to feel contentment. Also, we need to feel cared for and loved, regardless of the circumstances of our lives.

Beauty

Beauty nourishes the soul, whether it’s the amazing things we see in nature, or in the people we meet. By people I mean, not physically beautiful, but good-natured, kind people who put others before themselves.

Achievement

A sense of achievement from being successful in whatever endeavour you choose to try. In my case, completing a book, a website, or writing a poem, all give me a sense of achievement and of my own worth. My life means something, and hopefully not just to me!
